We have had a pretty exciting week for awards. This past Sunday night was our last night of AWANA for the school year. This year the boys were both in the "Sparks" club and Steve and I were leaders. I lead the Kindergarten with Isaac and Steve was with the 2nd grade boys with Ethan. Both of the boys love AWANA and look forward to it. For those of you that do not know what AWANA is, it is club like Boy Scouts but focused on Christian principles. We have a handbook that we work through that encourages the kids to memorize verses, share the gospel with others, learn about & pray for missionaries and learn responsibilities around the home. They earn patches, crowns and jewels for their uniform that they were each week. They have special event nights, game time, opportunities to serve the community as well as raise money for AWANA programs in other countries. It is a wonderful program that we feel is so important for our boys.
Ethan finished his last year in Sparks and graduated to the next level, Truth and Training Club. He has been in this club for 3 years (k-2) and memorized and recited over 166 bible verses & learned all of the Old and New Testament books in those years. WOW!! He has commited many of them to heart and reminds of them when I am having trouble. He received his 3rd book award and a Sparky Plaque for finishing.
Isaac completed his first year of Sparks and he learned 55 verses and all of the New Testament books. He received his first book award and his review patch b/c he said all of the verses in his book twice!! I am so proud of them! They really try hard and spend several hours a week memorizing the verses and completing their required tasks!!
Also this week, Ethan won a contest for the most minutes read in a school year. He read 2,205 minutes this year starting from September 25, 2007 - May 20, 2008. He loves to read and so there was no begging and pleading for him to accomplish this. He attended a special "reading" party and was given a prize bag full of goodies including; bookmarks, popcorn, jellybeans, a Dr. Seuss cup, a bottle of Sprite and his favorite, a $10 gift card to Books-A-Million. He was so excited and I am so proud of his love of reading. We have already begun to read "Alice in Wonderland" together for our summer book!!
